Friday, February 24th
This workshop will emphasize an integrative approach to using play therapy in clinical practice with victims of child maltreatment. A review of the literature as it applies to the clinical needs of abused children & adolescents will be conducted and the use of play therapy to meet these needs will be explored. Attendees will receive a variety of directive play therapy interventions which address common treatment needs of maltreated children & adolescents. An emphasis will be placed on integrating a variety of play therapy approaches & techniques to tailor treatment in a manner which meets the needs of each unique client to reduce posttraumatic distress & promote optimal growth & development. Special considerations for therapists working in the field of child maltreatment will also be discussed. Lecture, experiential activities, and case examples will provide participants with a comprehensive learning experience.

Learning Outcomes:

  1. After the workshop, participants will be able to describe areas of clinical need for children & adolescents who have been victims of child maltreatment.
  2. After the workshop, participants will be able to articulate how play therapy can be utilized in clinical practice with maltreated children and adolescents.
  3. After the workshop, participants will be able to describe 15 play therapy techniques to utilize in clinical practice with maltreated children & adolescents.
  4. After the workshop, participants will be able to describe the process of integrating play therapy theories & techniques to address the needs of children & adolescents who have been victims of child abuse.
  5. After the workshop, participants will be able to discuss areas of special considerations for therapists in the child abuse field including counter-transference, secondary traumatic stress, & self-care.

Saturday, February 25th
This workshop will emphasize the use of play therapy in clinical practice with victims of the unique form of child maltreatment known as childhood sexual abuse. Frameworks for conceptualizing the impact of sexual abuse, treatment components from evidence-based practice models, & play therapy will be integrated to create abuse-informed interventions that are developmentally appropriate & clinically sound. Attendees will learn an abuse-informed model for assessing & responding to play themes as well as a variety of directive play therapy interventions for clinical practice. Clinical complexities encountered by therapists working with families impacted by intrafamilial childhood sexual abuse will be examined. Lecture, experiential activities, & case examples will provide participants with a comprehensive learning experience. Attendees will leave with play therapy interventions which can be used the next day & an enhanced knowledge for using play therapy in clinical practice with victims of sexual abuse.

Learning Outcomes:

  1. After the workshop, participants will be able to describe 10 play-based interventions to utilize in clinical practice with sexually abused children & adolescents.
  2. After the session, participants will be able to use the dynamics of sexual abuse to assess & respond to play themes in a manner which addresses, alleviates, & prevents the negative impact of sexual abuse & facilitates healing.
  3. After the workshop, participants will be able to describe areas of clinical need for children & adolescents who have been victims of childhood sexual abuse & discuss ways in which play therapy can be utilized to meet these needs.

After the workshop, participants will be able to discuss clinical complexities which interface with the play therapy process in clinical practice with intrafamilial sexual abuse including reunification, legal proceedings, & scope of practice.
